Sociological Imagination
In the 21st century we witness many different and modified norms, values and sanctions. Now days, it is okay to be disrespectful to elders when before in the ‘60’s it was almost as bad as breaking a law. A value would be acceptance to others from gender preferences to religion. Before people could freely insult other people because of their beliefs and now it is extremely wrong. People have learned to embrace races in the USA; an example would be because of our colored president. One of the biggest values in the USA is technology. “Technologies will divide the world as well as draw it together.” New World Coming: American Security in the 21st Century, Hart G. A norm in the 21st century would be to with a cell phone everywhere and be connected to the world. If someone doesn’t have a smart phone it is very rare or even weird.
A value is a principle or standards of behavior, ones judgment of what is important in life. An internalized value associated with my fire project would be helping the less fortunate, succeeding at anyone’s cost, and everyone deserves their rights, not based on citizenship but based on everyone being human.
Norms are social behaviors that are expected from everyone as a group. A norm that is associated with my topic is the scamming the less fortunate, letting the government not help the poor, and taxes being spent on the wrong categories.
These norms violate me as a person for the fact that I believe the government works to oppress the poor and help the rich. I find justice for all is essential and should be carried on every day. We, as society, let the world revolve the way it does. We can stand up for not only third-world countries but we can also stand up to the people that live in our community who are as poor as the people in a third-world country. We are professionals at being bystanders and this has lived on for too long.
A sanction is a threatened penalty for disobeying a law of rule. In the USA is a sanction to defy the government. It is a sanction to kill people. We, as society, are letting murders happen daily. We could stand up for citizens and plead for medical care for all. Not let people die due to their lack of income but we choose not to. We are so busy worrying about ourselves we don’t spread awareness around the world about this topic.
Functionalism is the theory that all aspects of a society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society. The government makes us believe that for survival we need to succeed as an individual. That if someone lacks income it is because they are lazy, uneducated, don’t put effort, etc. but the reality is that in life, there are many scenarios and reasons in which people are less fortunate than other. This theoretical perspective is the best lens to apply to my issue because of how people conform and functionalism is the reason why most people conform the way they do, to avoid trouble for themselves.
