Social Justice is striving for equality for yourself and everyone around you instead of being a bystander and doing nothing about it. Social justice i speaking up when there is an issue that no one wants to address but you do try to solve it because you want to obtain the equality that everyone deserves. Social justice is a beautiful thing to me, its selflessness and hope for our society. Just how the hunger strikers wanted to help hundreds of students that they didn’t even know. These were parents and people who didn’t have kids either. They wanted to strive for equality and have a school since on "two six" side. These individuals took the time and will power to not eat so students wouldn’t face the dangers of going to a school on the wrong side.
The hardships and obstacles faced when trying to get Social Justice is society itself. It is hard to rebel when our politicians always seem to be closed minded when it comes down to our issues. "It’s only me, that won’t make a difference" is the mindset that makes our world not succeeds. It’s hard to work for social justice when there as so many branches to go through, the senators, governors, and then maybe, just maybe, your issue might be seen. Being low income has a lot to do with having trouble obtaining social justice, since we are seen as "nobody". No one thinks Latinos or low income individuals are intellectual or have anything good to offer.
The only way people should strive for Social Justice is by peaceful protesting and advocating when something is an issue and no one wants to speak up. Social Justice cannot take one day, it requires patients and commitment. Social Justice is like a job that requires people’s best effort. This is what my vision of social justice is because I have fought for it using these steps. My school had been neglected from AP courses and had fired 2 of the best teachers that had helped me grow as a student and person. I could’ve ignored this and chosen the role of being a bystander but instead my classmates and I came up with an idea. To obtain social justice we had a sit in and caught the attention of news reporters. Bored, tired, and scared we stuck together till our voice was heard and these step were more effective than starting a riot or what not.
My role in the struggle is to engage in any acts I see are not providing justice. Right now I want to go to college and be an intellectual Latina woman which is something society and my family think is just a dream. I want to join the fight for cancer and also advocate for the hundreds of colored woman who don’t get checked regularly due to lack of income. Having to choose to get a Breast cancer screening or pay the gas bill is an example of the choices most minorities face and I think that is a very sad thing to see. This is my fire.
My issue is connected to social justice because the deprivation of a health check up should be an option for everyone. Mortalities on cancer are high not because of the “unknown” solution but because woman and men as well just are not aware that they even have cancer. Its social justice issue because of the inequality in medical insurance for all classes, races, classes, and medical situations. I want to bring cancer awareness as well as neglect of medical treatment due to the lack of resources.
