Historical Context
The historical context of my project is based on the high diagnoses on cancer mortalities within the communities that are made up of minorities. Need citation Cancer starts when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. Cancer cell growth is different from normal cell growth. Instead of dying, cancer cells continue to grow and form new, abnormal cells. Cancer cells can also invade (grow into) other tissues, something that normal cells cannot do. Growing out of control and invading other tissues are what makes a cell a cancer cell. Need citation Cancer is extremely common now. Need citation About half of all men and one-third of all women in the US will develop cancer during their lifetimes.(Society, A. C.2014, March 24).
Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer. Need specific statistic and citation Cancer began around the 16th century and it was a big mystery. It was a fast death since there was no treatment at the time. Need citation People that had cancer were isolated so they wouldn’t spread this disease to anyone else but little did they know that cancer was not contagious but it was genetic or developed within time. The famous Scottish surgeon John Hunter (1728−1793) suggested that some cancers might be cured by surgery and described how the surgeon might decide which cancers to operate on. If the tumor had not invaded nearby tissue and was “moveable,” he said, “There is no impropriety in removing it.”(Sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, 2014)
In my community many people cannot afford to even get a simple checkup therefore they never find out if they have a tumor or any type of illness. The thing with cancer is that the longer you wait the longer your cells become infected and you’re closer to death. Any type of cancer has to be treated as soon as possible. Therefore low income individuals lack the income to pay for a checkup and later with time start to feel ill.(‘Neglected Infections’ Resurface Among America’s Poor 2009, October 27 PBS)
A hospital visit is made and then the diagnoses are done and then we, including myself, realize we are “dying.” You’re not dying; you are just unfamiliar on the treatments and the amount of hope available. In the current world we live in, radiations and chemotherapies are very expensive. Need a specific # for cost of treatment and citation Awareness about the topic and also the help that can be obtained is what should be shared to our community. Social Justice lacks in this topic.
